Dogs wind up at PHS for many reasons. Expert dog trainer Mike D'Abruzzo is helping the staff and volunteers at PHS understand how to best care for and “set up for success” the sad, frightened, homeless dogs that come to the shelter.
PHS is a non-kill shelter that believes in giving a dog rehabiltaion over euthanasia.
The training fund goes to keeping Mike D’Abruzzo and Liam working with the dogs at PHS.
Watch this video and understand just how hard Mike, Liam, all the staff and volunteers at PHS work to care for and train the dogs that reside there until they find their forever home.

Please help us rehabilitate and comfort the dogs at PHS by donating to our Training Fund, coming to PHS, and working with Mike and a PHS dog. And tell all your friends!

Thank you Mike, Liam, and all the Staff and volunteers for helping us –
and for saving our lives! XOXO

In case you don’t know...
- We are here for the animals...
To be the voice for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.
To provide protection, a safe haven and compassion through leadership for the homeless, abused, and neglected animals of our community.
To be the advocates for our unwanted/abandoned pets and promote humane awareness for all animals.
- PHS is dedicated to nurturing and protecting the animals in our care while they await adoption. We are committed to providing these animals with the patience, confidence, discipline, nutrition, medical treatment, and socialization they may require until they can be adopted into responsible homes.
- PHS is a NO KILL SHELTER - meaning, we do not euthanize for space limitations. We provide euthanasia for terminally ill and seriously injured animals to end their suffering when reasonable courses of treatment have been exhausted. We consider humane euthanasia in the animal's best interest - if an animal is behaviorally or mentally tormented to the degree that they will not allow any human contact or interaction and only after every effort has been exhausted to modify the behavior issues of the animal.

It was a lucky day for us when we were referred to trainer Mike D'Abruzzo of K9-1. We had just adopted our Boxer, Ruby, from the Putnam Humane Society and she was completely out of control! Thanks to Mike‚s patience and training expertise, Ruby is now the perfect dog. Not only does she bring us immeasurable love and joy but as a Registered Pet Therapy Dog, she also comforts the patients and staff at a local hospital. Mike means so much to us that we've named our new puppy after him! Mike is a gentle man who is passionate about dogs. With a training plan in place for each dog at the shelter, there is hope and possibility for the canine residents of the Putnam Humane Society. Thank you Mike!
Sincerely,
Suzan & Stu Fischer
Long time volunteer and member Kate McGunnigle says “Mike is a God send to PHS and the dogs. He is the most intelligent, comprehensive and commited trainer I’ve ever seen. He also has a big heart and really loves dogs! I have learned so much from him and have seen big positive changes in dogs that were considered difficult. Mike knew just what to do to help us help them with their issues! PHS is SO lucky to have him on board.”
